Originally from the Netherlands, Duit majored in psychology at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. Subsequently, he studied art with renowned Dutch artist and writer Chaja Polak. He then moved to New York and received a scholarship to attend the Art Students League for four years. He continues to reside and work in New York City, where his primary practice is photography. Duit has spent the past 23 years exploring the urban landscape of this metropolis. His photos are focused on the places and people who create this energetic town. In the great tradition of street documentarian photographers such as Henri Cartier Bresson, Weegee, and Robert Frank, Duit brings his own eye to survey daily life among the grit and grace he captures. Light, texture, reflection, and structural qualities are often at play in his primarily black and white photographs. The denizens of NYC are portrayed with candid and compelling intimacy.
